Since Fred Vasseur has taken over the reigns at Sauber F1 Team, plans of Honda supplying engines to Sauber for 2018 have been cancelled, a very good Ferrari engine deal has been struck instead, and it looks like Sauber would operate in 2018 essentially as a Ferrari B Team.
Commenting about running Sauber as a Ferrari junior team, Vasseur has now said that having someone like Charles Leclerc (who is a Ferrari young driver) “would make sense” for Sauber’s 2018 F1 plans.

“It’s a bit too early to speak about drivers, to be honest”, said the new Sauber boss. “We had to close the engine deal quite quickly. It would be a mistake to mix the drivers into the discussion. But we will have the discussion in the next few weeks.
“As a team, it would make sense to have someone like Leclerc or other young drivers.”
President of Ferrari Sergio Marchionne, however, is very keen on having Sauber as a Ferrari base for his young drivers.
“We need space because we have a couple of young drivers that are exceptional”, explained Marchionne. “We need to find a place to lay the foundations for the Scuderia Ferrari of tomorrow.”
So, Charles Leclerc to Sauber 2018? Or could it be Antonio Giovinazzi? Or both? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below or on Twitter @bhatonwheels
