When he dominated the Austrian GP weekend by taking pole and the race win, Valtteri Bottas convinced the F1 world that has now had and well truly joined the hunt for the F1 drivers world championship.
However, the Finnish driver still insists that he is only focused on taking each race as it comes and is not thinking about his F1 title chances just yet.

“For me, since the day I signed for Mercedes what else can you put as a target?”, said Bottas. “So it’s always been the target.
“With this team I’m developing so much every single race and I feel like I’m getting better every time, even though we’ve had some unlucky ones as well. But so will the other guys as well. It’s still a long year ahead, and for sure we’ll be in the championship fight.
“I don’t want to shout about it too much. It’s still early days in the championship, and we have more than 50 percent to go, so a massive amount of points to get.
“By making a thing about winning titles, it doesn’t change anything. You need to go race by race, or really session by session, lap by lap. That’s how it works.
“I know as a fact that in theory, with the points, everything still will be in the fight. So that is good to know.”
When asked about how Mercedes are going to handle both their drivers fighting each other for the world championship, Mercedes Motorsport boss Toto Wolff said that Bottas and Hamilton have a different dynamic compared to what Hamilton and Rosberg did, and that this title fight being a 3 or 4 way battle (with the Ferraris involved) makes it a different situation as well.
“We’ve handled it in the past”, Wolff concluded.
