McLaren boss Zak Brown has said that he believes Fernando Alonso’s excursion into oval racing for this weekend’s Indy 500 has put him in a positive mindset in turn helping him make the best of his underwhelming 2017 F1 season.

“A lot of driving is mental and this has put him in such a great frame of mind that I think is very healthy”, said Brown speaking to Motorsport.com, “He feels good that he’s racing, he’s competitive, he’s getting a lot of attention.
“He’s not an attention seeker, but it’s got to be fun knowing the world’s watching you race.
“We all work best in a good frame of mind, whatever that job is. This has just got him in a really good place after two years of not being in a good place, as we haven’t. It’s had the same effect on the team and partners. It’s just a breath of fresh air.”
Zak Brown commented on the fact that since the Indy deal was agreed around the time of the F1 Bahrain GP, he has seen a change in Fernando wherein he has been in a good frame of mind whilst extracting the most from a rather uncompetitive package.
Fernando Alonso has taken to oval racing like a fish to water. It is rather remarkable that as someone who hadn’t driven in IndyCar before, Alonso has been able to rub shoulders with Indy veterans.
His practice and qualifying performances speak for themselves, and Zak Brown isn’t surprised he’s doing so well.
“It isn’t a surprise”, said Mr Brown, “Someone of Fernando’s calibre you expect to do what he’s done. He’s showing he’s a two time world champion and further putting a stamp on his greatness. This is only going to make him a better driver.
“However, this place is so difficult and tricky that usually even the world’s best have a bad day. And knock on wood, he’s not had a bad day yet.”
The 101st edition of the coveted Indy 500 will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend on the 28th of May, and I know I can’t wait.
