Monaco GP : Could McLaren and Button be competitive?

Jenson Button will return to F1 to do a one-off race weekend for McLaren Honda at the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix, standing in for Fernando Alonso who is set to race in the Indy 500 the same weekend.

Recently, McLaren initiated the first phase of their car updates at the Spanish GP which improved the car, enabling Fernando Alonso to qualify P7.

With the second phase of updates coming this weekend at Monaco, Jenson Button has termed it a “massive step forward” and hopes that his one-off return to F1 will be a successful one.

Talking to media at McLaren’s World’s Fastest Gamer event, Button said : “It was great to see the performance in Barcelona in qualifying by Fernando. P7 – what a step forward.

“He obviously did a great lap but it shows how much improvement the team has made. It is massive. I can”t say how many points of downforce but it was a lot, and there is another good step for Monaco as well.

“If Fonzy [Fernando Alonso] can put it seventh in Barcelona, then we should be looking sweet for Monaco.”

Talking about his preparation for Monaco in the simulator, Button remarked : “When I jumped in, I initially didn’t like the feel of the car, and this was before the updates.

“So we made some set-up changes and it was much better and suited my style a lot more, and with the updates it is pretty awesome to drive.”

He’s also not under any pressure, either.

“If I get to Turn 2 and feel totally out of my depth”, he said, “I will drive off into the sunset and not come back! So it is fine, not a problem. I have no pressure.”

Imagine all of this circus concerning the 2017 car and Button could actually be the one to score their first points of the season.
